Architecture Design Studio 2

Emphasis on process of prototyping space through the exploration of solids, planes, lines, frames, surfaces and openings, with consideration of functional and spatial relationship, as well as form-making.

PROJECT 1: FAMOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR FACES
                      [DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION]

I guess most of the student in architecture course does not know the name of the architects as we only recognise the building itself. Thus this project gave us an opportunity to know more architects and their work respectively.

Therefore, in a group of 5 people, we are given an Architect name which is David Adjaye. In this project, we were to do research and analysis of AR. David Adjaye and his artwork and come out with video briefly about him, A3 drawings of selected artwork and lastly analysis model.

Objectives of this project are as follow:

1. Ability to identify famous architects and their worlds.
2. Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.
3. Ability to Diagram and analyse work of selected architect.

The following are my progress of work:

This short video was done by me and my group-mate which are Esther Lau, Cheang Eileen, Teo Kian Hui and lastly, Amelia.

This video is sort of an introduction to David Adjaye and some of his famous artwork.
After producing this video, we move on to another sub-project which is A3 drawings on tracing paper of selected building. The building we chose to do more research is The Dirty House.

And the last task for this project is abstract model of Dirty House analysis.

These are few of our progress model towards a better one. As what people always said,
'Practice Makes Perfect'. We were to come out with 5 analysis abstract model. In our choice we have chosen Design Analysis, Openings Analysis, Additive Analysis, Light Analysis
 and Circulation Analysis.

Above photo shows packaging of our models. Newspaper is used as the handler because Dirty House by Ar. David Adjaye is inspired by the shadow of trashes. Black colour box is use to represent the colour if the building itself.

The interior of the box, each model is placed according to the sequence and each have labelling and descriptions.
From left to rightDesign Analysis, Openings Analysis, Additive Analysis, Light Analysis
 and Circulation Analysis.

And lastly, not to forget, a picture of myself and the model on the presentation day itself.

Through this project, I can now recognise more Architects all around the world other than
David Adjaye from my course-mates. I realised that, every person has different style to start their idea and concepts and major materials used by each architect. Each of them analyses the surrounding and needs of the user very detail to give the best they can. I have learned that, each building we design is not for ourselves yet for our customers and users.

Learning Outcomes of this project are as follow:

1. Ability to identify famous architects and their worlds.
2. Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.
3. Ability to Diagram and analyse work of selected architect.

PROJECT 2

To progress to project 2, we were brought to Botanical garden and National Park at Penang. At botanical gardens, we are supposed to walk around and get inspiration from the nature. And the next day, we headed to National Park to hike to the North-Western tip of Penang which is Pantai Kerachut. The purpose of this trip is for site investigation to initiate the preliminary conceptual approach of the design. Everyone is required to hike across the hill to experience those park ranger go through because we were ask to propose bay watch and retreat house for park ranger.

From the trip, informations and analysis we got is summarise into site analysis.

PROJECT 2A: BAY WATCH

In this project, in a group of two, we were to begin with a volume of a solid cube 3x3x3 meter. By selecting a beach or water sport activity, and begin to design life guard port for the purpose of monitoring or guarding. The bay watch must have the function for observing, resting, eating and common activities and incorporated with spatial planning. A site is chosen to correspond to the bay watch and perfectly adequate access, circulation and fenestration.

Objectives of this project are as follow:

1. Ability to identify form and space through architectural conceptual.
2. Understanding user requirement and simple spatial organisation skills and site responding.
3. Ability to develop architectural proposition.
4. Understanding of how a building is conceptualise and transformed into reality.

The following are my progress of work:

These are 4 photos I have pick to develop idea.

Texture of tree trunk.

Direction of how the branch of this tree grow that leave a space in the middle.

The way branches and twig grow, which is twisted.

Nearer view of twisted branches and twig grow to fight for sunlight.

Conceptual drawings to represent each photos.

And then we progress from conceptual drawings to conceptual models into form and space.

Above image is showing my conceptual drawings and models.

After the above task have done, we were to pair up and continue developing our ideas and design a bay watch tower for park ranger at Pantai Kerachut, Penang.

Conceptual model, working model, transformed model.

Presentation board that includes idea development, perspective view and site plan.

North elevation, south elevation, first floor plan and second floor plan

East elevation, west elevation and sectional cut.

Overall view.

Presentation boards, model and I.

Finalized model; South view of watch tower.

West view of watch tower.

Based on this project 2A, I have learn a lot towards my dream of being an architect because it makes me realise that an architect must first experience the needs of user, how they transport to the site and surrounding environment that effect the design. Besides that, most architect inspire by nature not least I did gone through that too.

Learning Outcomes of this project are as follow:

1. Ability to identify form and space through architectural conceptual.
2. Understanding user requirement and simple spatial organisation skills and site responding.
3. Ability to develop architectural proposition.

PROJECT 2B: RETREAT HOUSE

For this project, we were to design a retreat house as mention in the introductory. This project is the extend the understanding of design concept and process. Besides that, this project introduced us the notion of architectural space making through the design of a user specific architectural scheme. This retreat is function as a habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, cleansing. cooking, storage and others within the built up space of 150 square meter.

Objectives of this project are as follow:

1. To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design.
2. To introduce us to the understanding of user specific design requirements.
3. To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design.
4. To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis.

The following are my progress of work:

Working model stage 1.

Interim to finalise idea.

Final design model ; Top view

Overall view of model without roof

Actual model for presentation; Side view

Front view of the model;
from left to right; view to bedroom, living area and dining area.

Overall placement during presentation day.

Throughout this project, this is the most influencing project I have come across in Architecture course year 1. I said so because, I did a lot of effort in this project like attending extra tutorial session, researching on spaces, referring of existing projects on retreat house, site analysing and etc. This give me a huge impact on how to be an architect, not a successful one yet, but steps to be one day. Besides that, designing a shelter to user is really important as in the requirement and needs of the user. Orientation and placement of space is also important to utilise the natural sources provided to us as environmental friendly to the environment at National Park. In this project, my concept is 'Simplicity' where a characteristic of park ranger itself have shown their love and passion toward the flora and fauna. Simple as in simple space division like bedroom, living room and kitchenette. Besides that, it brings spatial quality in each and every corner.

Learning Outcomes of this project are as follow:

1. Interpret and analyse simple site context.
2. Interpret and analyse clients' character and needs in relation to the design of small building.
3. Design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design value.
