Architecture Design Studio 1

Introduction to architectural design as a self-expression, through the design of a full-size space for one's own habitat, taking into account basic awareness of programme, materials, structure, construction and site.

PROJECT 1: REPRESENTING ME

This is an ice-breaking design project which introduces basic methods and approaches in generation of ideas and conceptual narratives.

The main idea of this project is for us, student to achieve through the exploration and creative representation of the self. We are supposed to choose one of a medium which will help us communicate and represent ourselves.

Objectives of this project are as follows:

1. To introduce the basic methods of generating ideas and abstracting conceptual narratives for design.
2. To explore various approaches to design thinking and production.
3. To explore interdisciplinary modes of artistic expression.

The following are my progress of work:

This is an artwork done in the first week of the class, where we are supposed to draw a portrait to represent our personality.

Then after a tutorial class, and some advice from lecturer, I came up with this model which represent me.

While this is the final product that I presented : Triangular prism.

It might look like a normal triangle, actually it is not. Throughout this project, I have learned a lot from colours and shape. Every single action I take of to make this object, I have my own reason of it. That is what I learned in first two weeks in Design Studio class.
Due to this is about personality, I would not explain much on this because I want to keep it myself and my course-mates and lecturers.

Learning Outcomes of this project:

1. Able to identify and abstract theme/ideas of the 'self'.
2. Construct a representational piece of art based on  the initial ideas that have been abstracted and
redefined through the process of translation and interpretation.

PROJECT 2: ME IN SPACE

The main aim of this project is to expand on the interpretation of the self by exploring the relationship between the human body and designed form.

This project consists of two parts to be carried out in teams of three. Firstly, we are should translate and explore space and form in relation to the human body through a series of scaled models. Then this is followed by a full-scaled installation of our developed designs.

Objectives of this project are as follows:

1. To further the student;s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.
2. To introduce and create an awareness of scale and proportion of the human body.
3. To explore how human anthropometry and ergonomics relate to and inform space.
4. To introduce basic design principles and terminologies.

The following are progress of my team work:

My teams member are Cornelia Wong Wen Chieh and Kiew Wee Kee. We were as a team because we  share the same personality which is introvert.

They are my team mate. We work as one.

We started off this project with exploring scale and proportion of our human body in order for us to understand more of kind of spaces we need.
After that, each of us were asked to create a form and space of our own spaces. And then, figure out if there is any similarities that can combine together to make as one.

First end product of our combination.

 Overall look of it.

Thus, we continue to make scale 1:50 model.

First attempt to make a type shape circle, but failed due to the board is too soft.

We were not sad that we failed, but we were feeling happy that we made mistake earlier so that we can figure out solutions to our mistake.
Thus we consult few of our course-mate for help and they suggest us to use hard and new board which can give us the shape we want. And, the result of it is really good.

Look of the inner part of our model. Scale 1:50.

The outer part when it is closed. Scale 1:50.

The outer part of our model. When it is opened.  Scale 1:50.

Inner + outer parts = Perfect!

The next day, we show these model to our lecturer and he gave us good comments and also suggest few ideas to make it even better. Thus, we continue making a model scale 1:50. Throughout the process of making a scale 1:50 model, it is totally different from making the scale 1:50 one. We did struggle for calculating the wrong measurements, having difficulties to attach and support the weight of the board. But, we did not give up because we know in the end, we can make a good artwork. All the midnight oils we have burn, and we even skipped celebrating mother's day celebration, at last, we are really proud of our model. As what I always remind myself, 'while completing a task, thinking of what you could gain instead of what you were losing makes the progress of the task easier and happier.'

The night before submission, we are done with our model.

Our leader was testing on the strength of our installation.

Model installation on the actual day.

Public is free to try on our model function and experience our personality space.

The look of our installation when it is closed from front view.

The side view of our installation.

Our installation strength can actually fit up to three people.

The concept of our installation is SOLO-ism, which means individualism, which means we are more comfortable when we are in our own space and is very hard for us to find new friend. Besides that, the reason why we use a circle as the outer layer is because it is like a hermit crab where they live their own and carry their shell wherever they go.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Able to identify and articulate basic design principles in space and form.
2. Able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the
human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative.

PROJECT 3: MY CITY DREAMSPACE

In this project, we are required to design a hideout space for ourselves by 'grafting' or engaging it to the walls of an imagined 'city' on an empty abandoned plot. The design should be inspired by our personal understanding and perception of a hideout that best fits our individuality.

This understanding is to be architecturally translated into a space that successfully communicates this sensory intent and a distinctive experiential quality within the space. We also utilise that understanding to consider how the space is to be 'grafted' to the existing walls. Additional considerations should also be given to anthropometry, scale and proportion, and materiality.

Objectives of this project are as follows:

1. To further student's ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.
2. To introduce and create an awareness of the scale and proportion of the human body.
3. To explore how human anthropometry and ergonomics relate to and inform space.
4. To develop basic design principles and terminologies.
5. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality.

When this project is started, my lecturer asked us to play with form to create space as in scale and proportion that we learned in project one and two. From playing and fixing the form, unexpectedly we will form a space that we could not think of. Because everything about design is progress. Thus in that progress, I choose the form of Tetris to create space.

This space is form using Tetris block with circulation.

From the mock up, I finally understand what should I do for this project after briefing by my lecturer. Thus I sat down and trying to figure out the personality of my character which is an adventurous, open-minded, choose to be conceal and lastly, desire for harmony. Then I came out with an idea that, I want to use regular shapes like pentagon and cylinder because they gave us a feeling of harmony.
After I choose the form to use for my design, then I proceed to the circulation that fits the form and shape that will form a space. And finally, my final product is shown as below:

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Design and produce a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative.
2. Be able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the
human body and a designed space or enclosure.
3. Be able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and
    relationships.
4. Be able to select and apply materials to embody and enhance the sensory experience of the space.
5. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality.

REFLECTION:

After undergone all these projects, the major things I learned is presenting, even though this is not one of the objectives in this module, but I am very thankful that I have a lecturer that always push us to be the best of the best.
