Building Materials

This module is about survey of visual and physical properties of building materials and their application, while encompassing energy saving and recycled materials.

EXERCISE : "MY HOME MY SPACE"

Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. This exercise is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. We are required to identify five(5) materials that are being used in any space in my HOME. We are then required to do a catalog of these materials and describe them through photographs, sketches and some descriptions.

Objective of this exercise:

1. To identify different materials used for construction or  finishes or furnishings.
2. To describe the general usage of materials.
3. To use the findings and produce proper documentation

Following is the work for this exercise:

Learning outcome of this exercise:

1. Recognize different types of materials and their properties.
2. Identify and describe the findings.

Reflection:

I am glad that we are given this exercise as a warm up to this entire module. Without this exercise, I would not be able to know what is finishing, finishes and construction materials are.

PROJECT 1: MATERIALITY OF SPACE: An  Experiential Exploration

This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study is allowing student to understand the reasoning behind choices made by certain designer in terms of concept, functional use, environment response, environment profile, structural requirement and availability of resource when selecting or proposing a building material.

Objectives of this project:

1. To introduce various types of building materials that is being used in the current construction
    practice.
2. To create an understanding of the choices designers makes in choosing the building materials based
on the properties of these materials.
3. To further understand the physical and chemical properties of the building materials being  used in
    existing buildings or spaces.
4. To expose students to standard construction names or terminologies for materials in a space or
    building.

For this project, we have chosen Palmiera at Kinrara Residence area house. It is actually a show room, we choose that place because at there, they contain a lot of finishing and finishes materials.

Following are the work of our group:
The Introduction of our research house.

Interior view of the house to show materials.

And one abstract artwork to represent our building selection.

Besides that, there is also an individual work for us. It is to choose a space in the selected building and specify the materials used in that selected space. In this case, I have chosen child bedroom.
Following is my work for this project:

Description of design intention, design concept and the materials used.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical
    properties
2. Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural)
3. Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or
    building.
4. Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept,
    climate
5. Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design
6. Understanding of application/installation of material as finish and structural material
   (simple construction)

PROJECT 2: MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

The process of selecting materials for a building project is a challenging task. Constructing a building requires enormous quantities of resources and energy. By building smaller, smarter and more efficiently, we reduce the resources and energy necessary to make our buildings work. By selecting the most appropriate building materials, we make a conscious decision to think beyond our project and consider the environment as a whole. Each individual building becomes an opportunity to create a healthier and more efficient environment.

Objectives of this project:

1. To introduce the process materials selection/proposal process by designers during designing stages.
2. To expose students to latest development and technology relating to the building materials.
3. To create an understanding of how the building materials selection can affect the aesthetic and
    structural values of their design.
4. To allow students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge of building materials.

After focusing on documentation and analysis of the existing materials in building of different concept, functional use and site context architectural space, this second assignment will focus on the challenging task of selecting materials for a design project responding to several issues such as site context, material compatibility with climatic, cultural, and aesthetic conditions, applicability of material to occupancy, size of building, including durability and structural requirements, environmental impact building materials and recycling issues.

Following is the work of my  material specification for my Studio final project.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical
properties of design or building space.
2. Exploration and identification of various types of building materials and technology.
3. Understanding the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a
    space and building environment.
4. Produce drawings on visualise the architectural effects of proposed materials (spatial quality)
