This module is about chronological survey of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors that influence the development of Western Architecture from easily civilisation to Enlightenment.

Project for this module is a continuous research throughout the whole semester and it is a group work which contains 4 members in my group. And our research ancient building is Villa Capra from Renaissance period.

PROJECT 1

Objectives of this project:

1. To introduce basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concepts, patterns,
disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.
2. To examine architecture history through a chronological survey, looking at the intellectual, aesthetic,
technological, political and economic factors which have influenced architectural design.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Recognise and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types,
    styles and periods.
2. Exemplify the sequence of historical period periods and how they are represented architecturally.
3. Classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural
    language and contextual relationship.

(A): ESSAY

We were to write a 500-word essay with images, sketches and diagram to maximise 5 A4-size papers  of our research done on the chosen building which is Villa Capra.

 The essay we produced

(B): ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD

For this part, it is an individual work doing research on analysis of:

  • Concept analysis ( building concept and architect concepts)
  • Building massing analysis ( structure, geometry)
  • Circulation analysis
  • Spatial organisation analysis ( public vs. private, symmetry and balance, unit to whole, repetitive to unique, additive and subtractive, hierarchy)
  • Building section analysis.

The final product of my work which is fully hand-drawn.

(C):Model

In this part, we were to produce one basal timber model to communicate the analysis.

Front view of the model. Which includes front elevation, floor plan, statue and words of Villa Capra.

Close up look of the carve statues.

The side view of the model which show the section of Villa Capra.

And lastly, we have a verbal presentation on our precent study we gone through the whole semester using the existing material of essay, presentation board and model.
