Design Communication

This module is an introduction to fundamental skills for communication of architectural design, taught through freehand, constructed drawing, and architectural modeling held outdoors and in the studio.

PROJECT 1(A): ON-SITE SKETCHING

This project aims to develop skills in visualisation and expression of space through free-hand sketches exploring different mediums (water colour,pencil,charcoal,one-ink). We are require to produce at least 4 sketches that demonstrate our understanding of space and basic principles of architecture within Taylor's Lakeside campus or other sites. These sketches include exterior and interior spaces.

Objectives and Learning outcomes of this project:

1. To understand the notion of space in architecture.
2. To develop skills in visualising of space through observation and perception of a given site.
3. To develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication.

Followings are my sketches:

View of Swettenham Pier, Jetty Penang.
Media: Pencil

Breakfast meal view.
Media: Water Colour.

Setting in a restaurant.
Media: Pencil

Backlane view of a village.
Media: Colour pencil.

PROJECT 1(B): TONAL VALUES

This project is designed to build upon the previous assignment; in developing one's skills in creating depth and tone in a sketch, and thus refining and enhancing the ability to produce an architectural sketch that is legible.

Objectives and Learning outcome of this project:

1. To understand the notion of space in architecture.
2. To develop skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values.
3. To develop various of hatching through different medium.
4. Four variations of sketching techniques based upon you're design studio prototype model.

Followings are my sketches:

Technique: Cross Hatching
Media: Pencil

PROJECT 2(A): ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS: PLAN, SECTIONS, ELEVATION.

Objectives of this project:

By using the skills demonstrated and explained in the workshops, draw up the following required orthographic drawings.

My work for this project.
-ground floor
-elevations
-cross-section
-longitudinal section
-site plan

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing.
2. Record and present clear and legible architectural information manually.
3. Identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.
4. Demonstrate in pencil and ink examples of:

  • line types
  • line weights
  • line quality
  • hand lettering

PROJECT 2(B): AXONOMETRIC

Axonometric drawing is an excellent method of communicating and expressing an expressing an architectural idea- be it as a diagram at a fairly early stage of design process( conceptual expression) or as a presentation aid upon finalization of your design.
Axonometric drawings are a visually instigating and exciting way of expressing an idea clearly with minimal words if executed well.

Objectives of project:

In doing this project, by now, a fairly in-depth understanding of the architectural detail and spatial value of the Barcelona Pavilion.

Parts of the Barcelona Pavilion in interior and exterior.

Learning outcome of this project:

1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an
    axonometic projection.
2. Understanding of what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to
    the design process and presentation.
3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

PROJECT 2(C): PERSPECTIVE

The use of perspective to create not just an illustrative picture of design intent, but also a comprehensive and inspiring one. Here, not only is spatial and procession being illustrated, but also spatial function and some of the buildings structural components.

Objective of this project:

This project introduces perspective as a mode of communication in architecture. Require to construct firstly, one exterior (two-point) perspective followed by one sectional interior perspective (one-point).
In constructing both these perspective, we are to demonstrate the ability to express spatial idea in 3-D form, understanding of 2-D and 3-D relationship in architectural graphics, skills in drawing and composition, creativity and complexity of drawing.

Two-point external perspective and one-point internal perspective.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point
    and two-point perspective.
2. Understanding of what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to
apply them to the design process and presentation.
3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings with strong creative intent.
