Architecture Design Studio 4

This semester theme is “engaging environment and community, which  explores design by harnessing environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users within a given context. Project involves precedent studies on design projects that are responsive to the environmental conditions and sustainable issues. Using the precedent studies, students explore the environment poetics of the building enclosure that respond to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue and the existing building context (which has clustered built forms for example community centre, nature appreciative center, research centre). Considerations should be given to the complexity of the programme, site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of passive strategies for sustainable design. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with environment and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the community of users. Students are required to demonstrate applications of knowledge gained from Environmentally Sustainable Design and Building Science 1 modules from prior semesters and integrate research from Asian Architecture module.

PROJECT 1: GREEN INFO-SHELTER

Project 1 deal with Contextual responses that focus on community/social needs and environmental consciousness (climate and topography). Students are to design a shelter that provides information on specific events or activities. The project requires students to explore design through Integration of Plan and Section. The design is to indicate preference for specific material and construction technique. The located given to us is located at our campus itself nearby a quite spot whereby there is no one passing through because of the weather is it is isolated.

Objectives of this project:

This project required us to explore the environmental poetics of a structure that respond to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue, and the existing context. Students are required to design a small space within an open area applying ideas of environmental sustainability in architectural design. The structure should provide both a shelter and suitable environment for users.

The following are my progress for this project:

Pre-Design (Design Analysis)
  1. Understanding the site: In groups of 2 students, investigate the given site. Record and analyse the site context and the natural
    environment through photographs and diagrams.
  2. Understanding the brief: Identify and research the user needs
  3. Based on the site and user needs, brainstorm ideas for exploration of the shelter
Schematic Design (Problem Solving)
  1. Conceptual thinking
  2. Develop sketch plan and section to respond to environmental and user needs
Design Development (Resolving Design)
     1. Develop interior poetics (inside/outside relationship) by taking into account interaction between

         environment and architectural space/form

Model for this project

Hand drawn presentation board to show our skill in terms of drawing and sketching skill.

Learning Outcomes of this project:

1. Identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site
2. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability (gained from precedent studies, ESD and Building Science 1 in
    architectural design
3.Employ particular material and construction technique

Throughout this project I have learned that designing will easier if we follow the steps given. Being an architect is not an easy job as we need to be attentive in terms of the site and its surrounding in terms of natural phenomenon or human attention towards the site. After analysing the site given, in a group of two, we were to brainstorm and do some research on the users need and related projects.

Next, after completing the phase 1 task of designing, we need to move on to the problem solving part whereby we need to figure out how respond to site analysis in terms of sun, wind, rain and pedestrian traffic. Other than that, we need to make the space more interesting and interactive with users to attract more people to that area.

Thus, this is my project 1 experience. I would say yes, this is a warmup to the next project!

PROJECT 2: NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE

This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design.
It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users. Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.

For this project, we travelled to a oldest rainforest in the world which it exist 130 million years ago. I did not know  that Malaysia have such a nice place. It has been an eye opening for me as the environment is supremely nice. One word to describe that place, AWESOME!

Site Location
The site is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak, 243-hectare
EMKAY Group, the owner and caretaker of the Island, envisions the development of Banding Island as a vital introduction to Royal Belum State Park and aims to position it as a premier heritage destination on the world ecotourism map. It operates the Belum Rainforest Resort that offers opportunity to get up close and personal with the natural world.

The location of this proposed site is known as BELUM-TEMENGGOR RAINFOREST and there is a nice designed resort to blend with the nature of the surrounding. From the resort itself, I have learned a lot in terms of materiality, design, ways orientating, sustainable design and constructibility.

Objectives of this project:

1. To develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design.
2. To develop the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as
      make poetry with the buildings.

The requirement for this project are as follow:

Building Height Approximate Floor Area
: Nature Appreciation Center : Setbacks as per authority requirements (where applicable) : 2 - 3 Storeys. : 800 sq m. (with the possibility to expand)
: Consideration for disabled (wheelchair) access : Consideration to the Public/Private accesses and separation : Consideration of the pedestrian accesses into and around the Site.

Occupants Public Access Pedestrian Circulation Other service facilities to be provided as per required

-   Communal / Meeting Hall (100 pax )
-    Information Area (200 sq m)
-    Learning Spaces (100 sq m)
-    Refreshment Area (30 pax + kitchen)
Facilities
: Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak
: To provide a Mixed-Use Facility to accommodate:
: Access and Parking

Pre-Design (Design Analysis)

Understanding the site: A thorough site investigation and analysis is required to inform students of design decision.
Understanding the brief: Identify and research the user needs
Based on the site and user needs, brainstorm ideas for exploration of the communal space.

Schematic Design (Problem Solving)
Conceptual thinking
Develop sketch plan and section to respond to environmental and user needs

Design Development (Resolving Design)
Develop interior poetics (inside/outside relationship) by taking into account interaction between environment and architectural

The following are my progress for this project:

As a group of design studio 4 student, we were required to do site analysis of Belum Rainforest as well as physical model for better explanation of that site.

Below are links to site analysis presentation slides:

Site for final project

After finished site analysis, we were to proceed to final project of first phase which is schematic design. Schematic design means solving the current problem faced in the site based on site analysis.

Then next design development which is design resolving. Adding all design elements and problem solving into one design which comes out to my final design.

These are my presentation board for my finals.

Last but not least,

My works and I. :D

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability in design.
2. Design and create architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural
context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences.
3. Combine the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’
experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context.
4.  Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural
design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.

I would say, hard work paid off!! This project has brought me up and down, happy and sad moment along with learning lots and lots of stuff regarding to architecture and relationship among friends and tutors. It has been like a roller coster ride for me. But I would say that I have improve from a poor in approaching people, presentation and shy person into a confident with my own design and dare to approach to people in order to learn more as well as improving my presentation skills.

Other than personal improvement, throughout this project, I have learned that design with nature is not an easy task. We have to consider in every ways and aspects in terms of the authorities of the site, identity of the site, the law and regulations, natural phenomenon and so on. We have to think deeply and wisely when we put each elements into our building, its not like 'I want this to be here because I like it', no, its wrong!

Hmmm, its hard to put everything in words, to know more about this project, feel free to drop by comment below and I will be proud to let you know more! peace! :D
