Architecture Design Studio 5

Architecture Design Studio 5 focuses on the theme of place-making for the urban street. It aims to explore and provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a market-place for the city’s inhabitants. We begin by conducting preliminary studies and context of urbanity through the analysis and documentation of the current urban condition of a selected inner-city site. This will be done in concurrence with the research of urban infill and market-place precedents, and architectural responses. By the end of the module,we have developed an appropriate scheme for an urban contemporary marketplace within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surroundings.

PROJECT 1: PRELIMINARY STUDIES

The Preliminary Studies is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city, and learning from examples of urban infill market-places around the world. This assignment aims to firstly introduce the basics in urban design and its relation to architecture, and secondly, studying and determining the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a market-place and architectural responses for urban infill.

The Preliminary Studies comprises of three components:
-Site Documentation and Site Analysis

-Precedent Studies of Urban Infill and Market-Places.

PROJECT 2: CONTEMPORARY MARKET-PLACE

For the rest of the semester, the design concentrate on designing a contemporary market-place within an urban infill site. The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies.

Apart from developing an appropriate formal and elevational strategy in response to the character of the street, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental requirements to address the user needs for an urban market-place. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project.\

FREE ART MARKET;

SITE: CHOW KIT, KUALA LUMPUR;

CONCEPT: IN & OUTDOOR

A market place where artist can sell their artwork related to traditional art and modern art as I when I visited the site, there is lack of art in the city and I see potential in building a Art Market in Chow Kit when I saw some wall art where created.

Other than Chow Kit is a market place for wholesale, retail and services various in food & beverages, accessories and clothing, it is an area with hard-scape with no soft-scape and no greenery for the neighbourhood. The reason why I use the concept In and Outdoor because I realize most of the business owner likes to stand outside of their shop instead on staying indoor because by staying outdoor, they are expose to the people around them.

STRATEGIES:

I) Using outdoor materials like natural lighting, natural ventilation, lamppost, hard-scape, and etc in indoor to create outdoor effect.

II) Play with view by creating different levelling.

III) Materiality. Uses materials based on its visibility to create transitional effect

In the progress to a final product, I started of with explorations of different heights and views and for the final product, I have chosen one of the best to kick-start my design.

PROGRESS:

END PRODUCT:

I have learned that, designing a market-place is not as simple as designing a building. Because market-place can be exist in any place at any time with two or more people gather together for interaction and dealing. Market place can be parasite, adaptation or hybrid.
While completing this project, I have learned a lot on how to start design by getting inspiration or solving site issue that occur, or even human behaviour could be a kick-start towards everything.
