ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Introduction to environmental issues and the complexities that design and construction professions have to deal with to contain irreversible damage to the environment.

PROJECT 1: GREEN-GO 2013 INTERNATIONAL SHORT
                      FILM CONTEST

This project is a film contest base as aim to encourage us to use our talent to raise awareness of contemporary environmental and social issues artistically. We were to capture interesting issues that are concerned with people, resources and ecosystem. This project is also to enhance our creativity and confidence by providing us with an opportunity to take part in international competition.

As time passed by, environmental issues have become a great concern for mankind at present time as these issue are affecting and will affect earn and us badly. As such, there are quite a number of environmentalists or movement either government or non-governmental trying and fight the justice human commit towards earth.

Objectives of this project are as follow:

1. To increase awareness of current environmental issues locally and globally.
2. To explore the local and global context of growth and therefore realising the relationship between growth and its impact on the environment.

For this project, we were to create one eye-opening short films which is either 'life in plastic, it's fantastic', 'water-the drop of life' or 'staying alive'. I have choose plastic as my concern towards environment.

This is my end-product for this project.

Besides creating an eye-opener video to the people, it also gives me an impact that we must take our responsibility and role towards the environment. Most of us only care for ourselves but we have neglect that the environment is also provide us life in terms of producing oxygen, shading and so on. Thus, we must learn how to reduce, repair, reuse and recycle to give low waste production.

Learning outcomes of this projects are:

1. Recognise the effect growth on the environment (nature/environment)
2. Explore the concept of environmental and ecological sustainability
3. Exemplify creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental circumstances
4. Recognise role and responsibility of an architect towards environment society

PROJECT 2: APPRECIATING ENVIRONMENT- NOTHING IS
                      CONSIDERED WASTE

The construction industry consumes huge amounts of natural resources and produces a significant quantity of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. Construction waste can be considered as one of the main factor that can give serious impact to the environment. High demands of the infrastructure projects implementation especially in the commercial buildings constructions and residential construction becomes the main reason of most of the construction waste comes from this sector. Therefore, construction waste management indeed is a big and important issue that should be emphasise in Malaysian construction industry.
Most construction waste goes into landfills, increasing the burden on landfill loading and operation. Waste from sources such as solvents or chemically treated wood can result in soil and water pollution. Construction is facing enormous pressure to find ways to conserve and make best use of our increasingly scarce natural materials. Some materials can be recycled directly into the same product for re-use. Others can be reconstituted intro other usable products. Unfortunately, recycling that requires reprocessing is not usually economically feasible unless a facility using recycled resources is located near the material source. Many construction waste materials that are still usable can be donated to non-profit organisations. This keeps the material out of the landfill and supports a good cause.

In a group of four, we have chosen two semi-detached house construction at Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya area. We are very glad that these contractor allow us to explore more about construction methods, materials and their uses and how the materials are recycled. After informations are collected for documentation, we were to produce a research poster. Then, for individual work, few research materials were collected from two sites were then divide among four of us. I have given PVC pipe and from that material, I have to produce a product out of waste.

Objectives of this project are:

1. To introduce basic awareness and environmental stress
2. To expose us to general construction material wastage e.g.: how, why and what are wasted on site
3. To create the awareness relating environmental issues relating to construction issues, such as landfill, non-degradable waste, water pollution
4. To create an understanding of the impact of non-reusing or recycling construction waste
5. To allow us to demonstrate our understanding and knowledge of material life cycle and recycling creatively.

The following are my progress of work:

Above image show the report of my group that include waste materials chosen to explore more, life cycle analysis, how is the waste generated and impact of it.

Above photo showed the report and my individual end product that made out of waste from construction site which is PVC pipe.

Throughout this project, I have learned that embodied energy for varieties material. Besides that, ways to reduce materials use by practicing the right way to use material. At the same time, using recycled materials can save costs while reuse waste materials by creating useful product like what we did for individual work.

Learning outcomes of this project:

1. Produce a complete documentation and analysis of waste on construction sites
2. Analyse and explain the reason why waste is produced on site
3. Explain innovative and creative method that can be adopted in reducing and recycling wastes
4. Create a creative and meaningful object from construction waste to demonstrate our awareness and appreciation of environment
5. Recognise role and responsibility of an architect towards environment and society
