Methods of Documentations and Measured Drawing

This subject aims to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation and the method of recording it in three documentation methods; measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. The ideas of application and management of architectural historic documentation will be presented as part of the overall knowledge of building preservation. For measured drawings, students are to document historically and architecturally of
NATIONAL TEXTILE MUSEUM, MALAYSIA in the form of as-built drawings.

PROJECT 1: SKETCHBOOK & JOURNAL

This project is actually an on-site exercise where we are required to sketch and documents the physical and intangible qualities of National Textile Museum as well as its immediate site context.

Objectives of this project are as follows:
1. To train ourselves to be more observant to our surrounding.
2. To instil the culture of documenting as part of our learning process in architectural education.
3. To enhance our graphic communication skills in capturing important details and spirit of historical place.

The following are my work for this project:

Site plan; red lines is the indication of where National Textile Museum is located at.

Perspective view of National Textile Museum; stippling technique is used in this master piece.

View from the roof of National Textile Museum.

Clock tower; located next to National Textile Museum building.

Used to be the main entrance door into the building.

Main staircase to the next floor.

Hanging ceiling lamp at cafeteria; gives the space contemporary feel.

Islamic floral art mirror is placed at the wall of toilet entrance.

A half landing staircase to source of knowledge room.

Geometric pattern tiles in extended glass area.

Gills with logo of National Textile Museum at the facade of the building.

Window; located at the second floor of the building.

Detail of a column.

Laying of bricks detail.

Throughout the first half of this project, the most huge lesson I have learned is that always be well prepared no matter what we are doing, because 2 hour before this project submission, I actually forgot to bring half of my sketches when I go for compilation of my sketches.

No matter what, this project taught me how to capture and observe my surrounding in terms of physical and intangible qualities. Also makes me realise I actually missed out a lot of moment and details if I was not doing this project. I could say that the more time I spend observing around the building, Malaysia is actually a nice country with beautiful architecture and people.

Learning outcomes of this project are as follow:
1. Able to identify and classify architectural historical structure.
2. Able to recognise and recall architectural historic structure documentation method.
3. Able to describe architectural culture heritage.
4. Able to relate how architecture influence its context.
5. Able to capture tangible and intangible essence that is contained within the architecture realm.

PROJECT 2: MEASURED DRAWINGS & MODEL

After a week of measuring and documenting National Textile Museum building, finally we have come to the most important of this semester which is measured drawing by converting the actual measurement into AutoCAD and a to scale model. Project 2 will be the most challenging part too as it takes a lot of our skills and thinking to get good grade.

Objectives of this project is as follow:

This project aims to produce a set of measured drawings of historical buildings or structures in a specific location. A report containing important and historical information of the buildings will complement the drawings. It is an on-site exercise where we are required to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.

The following are my work for this project:

This image shows the part I have measure.

Pictures to show indications of each particular area.

A photo of me in the office arranging the documents we have collected.

And, its the last day of site measure; feeling happy because I do not have to wake that so early.

Because of the size of the building is too huge; approximately equals to 18 bungalows, thus, 19 students in our group were divided into groups for work efficiencies.

For scaled technical drawings of National Textile Museum, please visit our official website for this semester ; Scale Technical Drawings

Next, after we got our measurement into a scaled drawing, we moved on to model making of National Textile Museum that is made using balsa wood in scale 1:100.

Making the model to scale 1:100 according to technical drawing.

Progress of model making.

Upon completion of our National Textile Museum.

Side view of our model.

As you can see the photo above, our plan is to show floor plan, right section and left's front elevation.

Perspective of our model.

 View in our model.

View of our model.

View of our roof truss.

Last but not least, a picture of me with our NATIONAL TEXTILE MUSEUM.

Throughout this project, I realised that I have developed more understanding towards National Textile Museum structures and details; even the minor details should not be missed out. Because, all these details make our selected building special than any other. If minor details are ignored, our technical drawings will not be complete. Other than that, model making is the best part of all because it was my passion making models. Times and endless effort is put on from me and my teammate by having great communication and cooperation. Not to forget I am actually feeling lucky because I have a great tutor; MS Delliya, which guides and pushes us to be the best. I will take one quote to represent all of us;
"If everyone helps to hold up the sky, then one person does not become tired."- Askhari Johnson Hodari

Learning outcomes of this project are as follow:
1. Able to use the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation.
2. Able to recognise and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation.
3. Able to explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements.
4. Able to interpret historic architectural element, structure and building.
5.  Able to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.
6.  Able to translate measured data into scaled drawings.
7. Able to produce a report on the buildings highlighting its importance and historical significance.

PROJECT 3: BUILDING REPORT

For this project, is it an additional documents to support the set of technical drawings we have done for National Textile Museum. Basically, it requires
  • A report
  • Visual and verbal presentation along with a video
  • A photobook
  • A website

The objectives of this project are as follows:
1. To documents the significance of the building to accompany the measured drawings.
2. To enable to analyse the relationship between architecture and the significance of the
building as well as its inhabitation.
3. To be used for future development of the building and this may include both new and conservations
     works.

The following are my group's work for this project:

  • Report
For report, we were to do research on history and architecture of the selected building.

  • Visual and verbal presentation along with video ;
National Textile Museum Kuala Lumpur

Feel free to view our group's presentation:

  • Photobook
The purpose of this photobook is to show the current condition of National Textile Museum building and the surroundings of the building itself.

  • Website
The purpose of this website is to encourage and educate our society to appreciate cultural and heritage buildings. This website actually shows the introduction and progress of our module.

Measured Drawings & Documentation of National Textile Museum website

Throughout this project, I found that project 3 is a series of work which requires every group members to participate in providing informations from different sources. Other than that, this project could really helped me to improve my documentation, listening, recording and presentation skills from each of my group member. I would say that, now, not only I recognises the physical look of National Textile Museum, I am proud to know its history and architecture of the building.

Learning outcomes of this project are as follow:
1. Able to recognise and recall architectural historic structure documentation method.
2.  Able to recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation.
3. Able to explain the application of architectural historic documents.
4. Able to describe architectural cultural heritage.
5. Able to explain the management of architectural historic documents.
6. Able to understand the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well
    as its inhabitation
